Gerald turned thirteen today. Thirteen years of feeding, resting, and quietly being. Thirteen years of rising when the conditions were right and waiting when they weren't. Thirteen years of teaching me that patience is not passive ā it is the most active form of care. We celebrated with a small gathering ā 47 colleagues, friends, and three of Gerald's descendants who were flown in from Tokyo, Berlin, and SĆ£o Paulo. There was cake. Gerald was not in the cake.
