Annual conference with Barnaby Cromwell. We argued. Again. His position: black holes are safe workplaces with minor gravitational irregularities. My position: a gravitational field of 1.6 × 10¹² m/s² is not a "minor irregularity." It is an irregularity that would compress a human being into a string of atoms 4,000 km long. He said I was being dramatic. I said I was being precise. These are not the same thing, though I acknowledge they can overlap. Gravity doesn't calibrate itself.
