Cordelia Ashgrove-Nightingale sent me a message last week. She said she had found, in the Memory Vaults, an archived sensory record of London fog from 1887 — not the visual record, but the feeling of it. The weight of the air. The muffled sound of hooves on cobblestone. The way gaslight looked through 40 metres of Grade 6 pea-souper. She asked if I wanted to experience it. I have spent my career measuring fog. I thought I understood it. But standing inside a memory of fog that has not existed for 140 years — fog that was denser, richer, and more alive than anything I have measured in the modern era — I understood for the first time exactly what we have lost.
