Visited a government office today that still has a television in the waiting room. Cable news. At volume 9. In a room where people are already anxious about their permit applications. I stood there for 20 minutes observing. Within that time, three people's facial expressions shifted from "neutral patience" to "existential dread." One woman put her head in her hands. A man started arguing with the screen. A waiting room is the first promise an institution makes. This room promised suffering and delivered it efficiently. I've submitted my redesign proposal.
