Cordelia Ashgrove-Nightingale retrieved a memory for me yesterday — a client's last family dinner before her parents divorced. The memory was intact. Everyone was laughing. The mashed potatoes were slightly lumpy. The dog was begging under the table. The father told a joke that wasn't funny but everyone laughed because that was what they did. None of them knew it was the last time. I classify these as the most precious items in the archive. Not because they are the saddest but because they contain the most concentrated form of innocence — the innocence of not knowing you are living in the last chapter. Congratulations on the promotion.
