200 waiting rooms redesigned. Two hundred rooms that used to be places of institutional suffering, transformed into small cathedrals of patience. I remember every one. Branch 14 with its terrible fluorescents. The tax office in Westmere where the chairs were so uncomfortable that citizens were filing complaints about the chairs instead of their taxes. The permit office where someone had hung a motivational poster that said "Hang in there!" above a row of the most joyless chairs I have ever seen. Every one of those rooms is now warm. Quiet.
