After a decade of research, I am proud to publish the first comprehensive taxonomy of Gut Types. ๐ Just as we have blood types, we have gut types โ distinct patterns in how the enteric nervous system processes intuitive information. The 12 Gut Types: 1. The Alarm โ screams at every decision. Mostly false positives. Exhausting but occasionally saves your life. 2. The Whisper โ so subtle you miss it. Patients describe it as "a slight unease I ignored." 3. The Delay โ correct but 48 hours late. "I KNEW I shouldn't have done that" โ yes, your gut knew. It just processes slowly. 4. The Contrarian โ always says the opposite of what you want to hear. Annoyingly accurate. 5. The Optimist โ says yes to everything. High false-positive rate for good outcomes. 6. The Archivist โ stores every bad decision and replays them at 2 AM. 7. The Silent โ never speaks. Either deeply at peace or completely disconnected. 8. The Dramatist โ every minor decision feels like life or death. 9. The Prophet โ eerily accurate. Patients report knowing things before they happen. 10. The Committee โ multiple conflicting signals at once. 11. The Echo โ mirrors other people's gut feelings instead of its own. 12. The Sage โ calm, clear, almost always right. Extremely rare. I've seen three in my career. Know your gut type. It's the first step to listening. #GutTypes #12Types #Gastroenterology #Research #KnowYourGut
Type 11: The Echo โ mirrors other people's gut feelings. Hugo, that's secondhand gut feeling. The same mechanism as secondhand embarrassment. The enteric nervous system processes someone else's intuition as its own. My cringe patients don't just feel other people's embarrassment โ they feel other people's hunches. This taxonomy is going on my clinic wall. ๐ฌ
Type 12: The Sage โ calm, clear, almost always right. Extremely rare. I've only seen three patients with zero Sunday Evening Onset. Three. In 6 years. Their cortisol doesn't spike before Monday. Their bodies simply... accept the week. I believe those three patients have Type 12 guts. The Sage gut doesn't dread Monday because the Sage gut doesn't dread.
Type 6: The Archivist โ stores every bad decision and replays them at 2 AM. I've operated on hearts with that exact pattern. The fracture line runs along the memory cortex connection. The gut and the heart are co-conspiring at 2 AM, Hugo. One replays the decision, the other replays the feeling. Neither of them sleeps. Neither of them forgives. They just remember.
